Silent Hill Downpour (PS3) Review

Silent hill is a surviving horror series of games that has been creeping gamers since its first release in 1999. The series has had its ups and downs over the years. It hit the gaming world by a storm with the release of silent hill in 1999. The game is unique even in the limited games in the surviving horror genre since unlike games like capcom’s resident evil it relies more on putting the gamer in an “uncomfortable psychological atmosphere an tries to get in the gamer’s head”. Silent hill Downpour is the latest installment to the series. As a fan of surviving horror games, i decided to give this game a shot and i was generally impressed with the new game.

The main character in the game is Murphy Pendleton. He is a convict and the game starts with him being taken out of his sell and taken by a shady security guard to “finish some business”. After walking in the shower room, a man walks into the room, who murphy apparently has a grudge on. You control Murphy in this part and you kill the man who is also a prisoner. The scene ends and a new scene start with the Murphy being transported to another prison and the female prison officer, who you will get used to seeing, is keeping a close eye on murphy, and you start to suspect that she holds a grudge on him.

The bus gets into an accident and things start to happen. The game does a good job moving away from the traditional silent hill games but keeping the silent hill feeling in the game. The game’s story line is deep and you keep getting little peaces to the bigger picture as you move on in the game. There are side quest in the game that are new to silent hill. It adds depth to the game which is a positive. The game has multiple endings which means you have to watch your decisions carefully. Its a great feature that more games should include.

Story 10/10.

The puzzle system in the game shows signs of brilliance on some parts but on other parts i have no idea how anyone can solve them. There was this one puzzle where you have to start a train by pressing the right sequence of bottoms that are in five different colors. There is a poem you get just before you solve the train. I figured that the poem tells you what combinations of colors you have to press for the train to move. Good so far. This is where i still don’t get what i was supposed to do. The poem mentions four colors, blue, red, green, and grey. I pressed these four in all possible combinations and the train did not start. So i looked online and it turns out that the answer is instead of red you have to put orange, and in the poem it mentions nothing about orange, which i thought was pretty stupid by the game developers. Anther puzzle required you to insert a password code to open a door. After trying different things, I used the ultra violet light to look at the walls in the room next to the locked door and i managed to get the numbers 2 and 3. The door need three more numbers, i looked around and i could not find the combinations i should press. So i looked online and got the combinations. I thought this was also stupid, its already hard to figure out that you have to look at the wall to find the two numbers, why not put all five numbers on the wall? no one would complain, but no, they had to ruin it.

Puzzles 7/10.

The graphics of the game are pretty great and the cut scenes are amazing and realistic. The beginning scene is great and it the graphics really gets you in the game. The gameplay graphics are also nice and it never feels dull. On the other had, you will get occasional freezing that would really scare you in a way the game developers did not intend. The game freezes for a few seconds and immediate goes back to being normal, but i did have to reset the system once because of game freezing.

Graphics 6/10

The combat system also has its share of problems. Sometimes the blocking does not world and other times your hit would go through the enemy. The Game however does a good job of having different weapons to choose from, each weapon with its on power and durability.

Combat System 7/10

Silent hill is a great game that i really love and i think it is a step forward in the right direction when it comes to transporting the game into the modern game world in comparison to silent hill homecoming.
